Chicago Center for Orthopedics Sports Medicine and the Chicago State Cougars
Since the winter 2010 season, orthopedic and sports medicine experts from Vanguard Chicago Center for Orthopedics (CCO) have provided medical care to the Chicago State Cougars, making the CCO the exclusive healthcare provider for the college’s athletes. The partnership is part of the CCO’s overall commitment to improve the health of the community by caring for both professional players and amateur athletes.
The Chicago State Cougars
A Division I school in the NCAA’s Great West Conference, Chicago State University is home to 7,200 students and offers 14 sports—seven men’s and seven women’s. These include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball, and track and field. The campus is located on the South Side of Chicago at 9501 South King Drive.
At Weiss, we strive to build on our commitment to educate our surrounding communities about healthy lifestyles and fitness. The CCO's sports medicine specialists provide patient-centric care to the athletes at Chicago State. Player and mascot appearances at Weiss Memorial Hospital throughout the season also will help to promote the importance of physical activity and its role in health for life among hospital employees and patients. Check the Cougars’ website for more information and game schedules.
The Sports Medicine Experts at Weiss
Danielle Bass, M.D., sports medicine specialist with the CCO, serves as the team physician for the Chicago State Cougars. She and the other CCO orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians—with affiliations at Chicago’s finest academic and research facilities, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois and Loyola University Chicago—provide the Chicago State Cougars with medical care to ensure their long-term health and viability on and off the court as professional athletes. CCO already boasts high patient, physician and employee satisfaction scores—among the highest in the nation—illustrating the dedication behind the expertise.
This medical partnership not only keeps the outstanding Cougar athletes healthy and at top performance, but also serves as a vehicle for outreach to competitive and recreational athletes of all levels, from professionals to weekend warriors. Through interaction with the community and ongoing education, our goal is to improve injury prevention and even injury care with minimally invasive or arthroscopic surgery.
New techniques in hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair and ACL reconstruction have enabled athletes with injuries in the shoulder, hip or knee to rapidly recover, return to sports and get on with their lives. CCO's Sports Medicine team provides the right balance between preventive care, individual athlete/patient understanding and leading edge techniques.
