Chicago Center for Orthopedics Sports Medicine and the Windy City Thunderbolts

Windy City Thunderbolts

Since the 2011 season, orthopedic and sports medicine experts from Vanguard Chicago Center for Orthopedics (CCO) have provided medical care to the Windy City Thunderbolts, making the CCO the exclusive healthcare provider for the minor league baseball players. The partnership is part of the CCO’s overall commitment to improve the health of the community by caring for both professional players and amateur athletes.

Windy City Thunderbolts
This year marked the Thunderbolts’ 12th year in the Frontier League, the premier independent professional baseball league in the country. The Thunderbolts play home games at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, IL.

At Weiss, we strive to build on our commitment to educate our surrounding communities about healthy lifestyles and fitness. The CCO's sports medicine specialists provide patient-centric care to the athletes of the Windy City Thunderbolts in order to keep the players healthy and set an example for the community. Player and mascot appearances at Weiss throughout the season also will help to promote the importance of physical activity and its role in health for life among hospital employees and patients. The Sports Medicine Experts at Weiss
Preston Wolin, M.D., CCO sports medicine specialist, serves as the team physician for the Windy City Thunderbolts. He and the other CCO orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians—with affiliations at Chicago’s finest academic and research facilities, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois and Loyola University Chicago—provide the Windy City Thunderbolts with medical care to ensure their long-term health and viability on and off the field as professional athletes. CCO already boasts high patient, physician and employee satisfaction scores—among the highest in the nation—illustrating the dedication behind the expertise.

This medical partnership not only keeps the outstanding Thunderbolts athletes healthy and at top performance, but also serves as a vehicle for outreach to competitive and recreational athletes of all levels, from professionals to weekend warriors. Through interaction with the community and ongoing education, our goal is to improve injury prevention and even injury care with minimally invasive or arthroscopic surgery.

New techniques in hip arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair and ACL reconstruction have enabled athletes with injuries in the shoulder, hip or knee to rapidly recover, return to sports and get on with their lives. CCO's Sports Medicine team provides the right balance between preventive care, individual athlete/patient understanding and leading edge techniques.
